As a celebration to the marking of Bauhaus’ 100th anniversary, the city of Weimar celebrated the opening of the recently-completed Bauhaus Museum, along with its permanent exhibition of the 100-year history of Bauhaus. Designed and curated by Barbara Holzer of Holzer Kobler Architekturen, the museum’s permanent exhibition houses the world’s oldest Bauhaus collection, showcasing the school’s most notable inventions.

Holzer shares that it is definitely a challenge to design the exhibition space; from the discussion of “How do you constitute an exhibition for the Bauhaus design icons?”, to the challenge of exhibiting many objects without obscuring any of their visual presence, to the limitations of possible forms of presentations due to the Bauhaus’ collections’ security requirements.

The end result of the exhibition was a spectacular visual feast. With a delicate and elegant construction system, the historical presence of the objects is upgraded as genuine witnesses of that time, alongside a minimalistic exhibition design to emphasise each of the objects. Materials are also only subjected to three different kinds – glass, steel and fabrics. Together with the accompaniment of artistic media installations, the exhibition opens new layers of perception which brings the history into the present.
